What is CBD? And can it help me when it comes to pain relief?

You don’t need us to tell you that CBD (or cannabidiol) is everywhere and that people love it! It seems like a miracle product that you can eat, drink, vape, and even bathe in. While there is still so much to explore about this little compound, many people have started to claim some impressive benefits, especially when it comes to managing chronic pain.

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound that is found in the cannabis plant. While many people know the more popular compound, THC, CBD is different. For starters, CBD will not give or produce a high or make you feel like THC normally does.

CBD works on a system of receptors in your body that can be known as cannabinoid receptors. These receptors are all throughout your body, and researchers have identified two major types. The first type, CB1 is found primarily in the central nervous system, which includes parts of the brain and spinal cord. The second type is called CB2, and this receptor is found in the immune system tissues. Both have also been found in the skin, which is why topical creams have been seen to be so effective. Research has found that while THC can bind and activate these receptors, CBD seems to modulate and somewhat block the effects of CB1 and CB2 receptors.

When people think about cannabis, many people think about THC. However, CBD does not contain any THC, unless you buy a product with both CBD and THC in it. CBD has been seen to not have any significant effects in the brain, which is why it is referred to as a “non-psychoactive.” It does however, have some effect on the central nervous system, so use that term lightly.

CBD for Pain Relief

One of the most common ways that people are using CBD is to help manage and relieve pain. A study done by the National Academies of Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering showed that adults who were treated with cannabinoids were more likely to experience a clinically significant reduction in pain symptoms when it came to chronic pain.

While there is so much research coming out, most of the studies that we do have about CBD and pain relief are coming from animal studies. While we do not support any type of animal testing, a study in 2016 from the European Journal of Pain looked at arthritis in rats with a form of topical CBD. The rats received and injection into one knee joint that was made to replicate arthritis, they then received a gel that contained different amounts of CBD. The research concluded that the rats who were given higher doses of CBD showed significantly lower levels of pain and inflammation than those who were given lower doses.

There have been no conclusive studies done to prove that CBD is a pain reliever for humans; however, many customers have reported feeling relief from sore muscles and joint pain when using it. While CBD could be part of the relief, it could also be dependent on many other things.

So does it work? Should I try it?

Depending on your states legalization of both THC and CBD, if they are legalized we say try it! There is absolutely no harm in trying this and who knows, you may find that it brings relief.  Many consumers have reported feeling less chronic pain or at least some temporary alleviation from stiff joints or sore muscles.
