Help us, help you. How to Talk to a Budtender 101.

If it’s your first time going into a dispensary it can be a bit of an overwhelming and intimidating experience. Once you give the security guard your ID, you’re led into a room full of all types of cannabis products and trust us, there’s a lot to choose from. Even if you think you know what you want, it can still be helpful to talk to a budtender to make sure that you’re getting exactly the right strain and type of product for you. Hopefully, your budtender is as well experienced in weed knowledge and customer service as our budtenders at Empire Health and Wellness. But if you’re not as lucky, having these factors in mind can help your budtender help you find the best product for you. You help them, they help you. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!

Consumption Method

It’s no secret that cannabis can be consumed in a wide range of ways. There’s your classic flower consumption, the more modern vape pens, and edibles. The choices are truly endless when it comes to consumption, so think about it, and figure out what you want. If you’re on the fence about what type of consumption method you want, your budtender should be able to ask you a few more following questions in order to help determine the final product, but if not don’t hesitate to ask them questions. It’s important that you get the right type of product because after all, it’s going to truly only affect you in the end. No one wants to have a bad weed experience so choosing the right product can greatly affect this.

Does it need to be discreet?

Discreet consumption is more of a matter of courtesy than anything, but think about where you’ll be smoking. If you prefer to smoke in the comfort of your own home, like most of us, are there people or pets around you that probably won’t enjoy the smoke as much as you? If you answered yes, you may want to find a method of consumption that is a bit more discreet. Bring this to the attention of the budtender so that they can guide you towards a product that will give you all of the benefits, without accidentally giving them to those who don’t want them. Edibles, pens, topicals, capsules, and tinctures are great ways to consume marijuana in a more discreet way.

Recreational or Medical

It’s important to let your budtender know why you want to use cannabis products. Now we don’t need your life story, but let them know if you purposes are strictly medical or recreational. For example, if someone is looking to gain relief from pain, they would probably benefit more from an infused transdermal product than if they were smoking flowers. Similarly, if you want to manage your anxiety, you’ll probably have a more enjoyable experience if you use a tincture product rich with CBD rather than take a dab full of high THC resin. While you may be able to reap some of the medical benefits of cannabis from recreational use, medical use is a whole other realm.

If you’re seeking to use cannabis purely in a medical way, consider speaking with a physician educated in the ways of medical marijuana. It’s also important to keep in mind that not all physicians meet this requirement and not all of them will have the same opinion. Cannabis is also not scientifically proven to cure any type of physical or medical disease or issue.

Psychoactive or Not

It’s no secret that cannabis can have an effect on your mental and physical state and in vastly different ways depending on the type of product you use. Dosage and consumption method can also affect how much of a psychoactive experience you’ll have. These aspects can change when you also factor in your own personal tolerance. Understanding your tolerance is very important, especially when you’re discussing dosage with your budtender. There are certain products that may be non-intoxicating, especially if you’re looking at products with high amounts of CBD. Other products may be more uplifting and cerebral, while some are meant purely for relaxation and sedation. Communicating with your budtender about whether or not you want a certain type of experience can help them guide you to the right product that will meet your exact needs.

Duration of the High

This goes with the type of consumption method that you’re looking for, but it’s also important to determine how long you’re looking for your high to last. Certain consumption methods will also take longer to feel high too, so determine how quickly you want to get there. If you’re looking for a product that will get you high in a short amount of time, opt for a dab. But if you want something to gradually get you to that high, try opting for an edible product.

While not all budtenders are created equal, we can assure you the ones at Empire Health and Wellness are well experienced and educated. But, if you’re not in the Modesto area and cannot come to visit us or shop our products, noting these aspects are a great way to help yourself figure out which product is right for you and what to ask your budtender.
